Ken D'Angelo Foundation awards more than $15,000 in scholarships
By Lanese Querner

The Ken D'Angelo Foundation, a charitable organization established in 2005 in memory of HomeVestors' late founder, Ken D'Angelo, is pleased to announced its 2007 scholarship recipients:

  • Kai J. Dickson of Lithonia, GA, $1,000
  • Kenneth M. Gross of Arlington, TX, $2,500
  • Megan E. Hefflefinger of Corning, IA, $1,000
  • Karissa McDowell of Eugene, OR, $2,500
  • Kimberly D. McLellan of Petaluma, CA, $ 2,500
  • Jessica R. Miller of Pottstown, PA, $2,500
  • Cameron Powel of Nashville, TN, $2,000
  • Blake A. Weller-Alexander of Jasper, TX, $1,000

An additional scholarship of $1,000 was awarded to David Martinez of Garland, TX, in memory of Shane Petroski, a Garland teen who died last year in a car accident. Financial contributions were given to the Foundation in Shane's name. His parents, Joe and Eileen Petroski, were long-time friends of Ken D'Angelo. Joe also serves on the Foundation's Board of Directors.

"We are very proud of this year's scholarship recipients and the impact that the Foundation is having on the lives of young leaders for tomorrow," says Dr. John Hayes, president and CEO of HomeVestors and chairman of the Foundation. "The Foundation received approximately 30 applications, from which our selection committee chose the best qualified candidates."

Two of the scholarships were awarded through DECA (formerly the Distributive Education Clubs of America), an international association of high school and college students studying marketing, management, and entrepreneurship. Karissa McDowell and Jessica Miller received the DECA scholarships. Cameron Powel's scholarship was awarded through a relationship with the International Franchise Association, a membership organization of franchisors, franchisees, and suppliers, dedicated to promoting franchising. The Foundation directly awarded scholarships to Kai Dickson, Kenneth Gross, Megan Hefflefinger, Kimberly McLellan, and Blake Weller-Alexander.

The scholarship winners have also been invited to attend the Annual Convention, where they will have the opportunity to meet and speak with HVA franchisees.
