One Day and 10,000 Homes

Save April 29 and help rehab a home in your community
By Howard Silberstein

On Saturday April 29, 2006, more than 225,000 volunteers in almost 1,900 cities and towns across the country will pick up hammers, paint brushes, saws and other tools to rehabilitate 10,000 homes owned by elderly, disabled and low-income families who cannot afford to repair them.

This National Rebuilding Day is coordinated by Rebuilding Together and its 250 affiliates (including HomeVestors of America) nationwide. The purpose is to revitalize substandard living conditions of low-income homeowners, repair dilapidated neighborhood community centers, schools, Boys and Girls Clubs and other non-profit facilities.

There are 24 million low-income homeowners at risk of losing their homes because of environmental, health and safety issues that depend on Rebuilding Together for help.

Here’s just one of the thousands of stories of people helping people across the country:

Ms. Evelyn is 69 years old and a double amputee. The wheelchair bound woman lives with her daughter. She is confined to her living room which serves as her bedroom.  Nothing in the house is wheelchair accessible. The doors to the first floor bathroom need to be widened and the toilet needs to be raised. She is unable to take a bath. A sheet is used as the bathroom door giving no privacy. Ms. Evelyn must call her neighbors or family to carry her outside…she is a prisoner in her own home.

Rebuilding Together and its team of volunteers will convert the house to be wheelchair accessible with wider doors and access through all entrances.

The story of Ms. Evelyn will be repeated hundreds of times throughout the day on April 29. Rebuilding Together and its volunteers will convert substandard housing into livable, comfortable and safe homes. From roof repairs, electrical, plumbing, weatherization repairs, painting, landscaping and cleaning houses - houses will be restored and lives will be changed.

Rebuilding Together’s efforts on April 29 and throughout the year make it possible for homeowners to stay in their homes with warmth, independence and dignity.
